The name of the site is plucked right from the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel. I must credit my friend and fellow Catholic Christian Joe Mixan of Omaha Fire for the brainstorm, however. Later on, I began to abbreviate Defend Us In Battle with the acronym "DUiB."
That imposing sword holds special meaning. Obviously, it's evocative of St. Michael, slayer of the dragon. My Patron Saint (whose name I took in Confirmation) is sometimes depicted with staff or spear, but more often than not Michael imagery includes a sword, so it fits the theme of this web apostolate perfectly.
The weapon itself is a Irish Gallowglas sword, employed by migrant Scot mercenary warrior elites in the 13th to 16th centuries. Mostly Catholic, these men must have been sturdy, as the swords were over three pounds and 48" in length.
The scripture text beneath the blade is one of my favorite in all the bible, an excerpt from Ephesians 6. The Word of God is the sword we wield as we fight the Adversary. Indeed, I'm a believer in spiritual battle (in polite opposition of those who think the "devil" is simply an abstraction). If you're feeling tempted, prayerfully read Ephesians 6, you'll feel better - I promise!
